Business Challenge

For one of the nation's largest High Tech manufacturers, provided the project management and the technical team leadership for a large scale design recovery project.

Responsibilities included leading the effort associated with decomposing the production jobs, procedure libraries, programs, copybook libraries, load module libraries, and database schema.

As a part of these efforts, developed estimates and plans for completing the technical work required, designed the architecture used for parsing these objects, implemented the designed architecture, and organized the results generated.

Once all data was gathered, it was loaded into a relational database for reporting and query purposes to assist with assessing the impact of replacing specific components and establishing appropriate plans.

Results

Inventoried the current application and identified the boundaries of the current application.

Uncovered relationships and dependencies inherent within the application’s components and across applications.

  Highlighted interface requirements.

Benchmarked the current application’s technical architecture (size and complexity).

  Improved legacy system application understanding.

An example report follows:

Member Name Job Name Job Step Proc Name Proc Step Program Dataset
PRODJOBA PRODJOBA JSTEP001 PRODPRCA PSTEP001 IEBGENER PROD.DSN.1
            PROD.DSN.2
        PSTEP002 PGMA PROD.DSN.2
            PROD.DSN.3
            PROD.DSN.4
PRODJOBB PRODJOBB JSTEP001 PRODPRCB PSTEP001 IEBGENER PROD.DSN.3
            PROD.DSN.4
        PSTEP002 PGMA PROD.DSN.4
            PROD.DSN.5
            PROD.DSN.6

Key Considerations

For this process to be completely successful, it was important that all source code was available. Without all the source code, specific links and relationships could not be established. For example, if a source program was missing, there would not be a way to confirm whether or not that program was dependent upon any copybook libraries.

Client Profile During the Project

Annual revenues of over $13 billion

  Over 80,000 employees worldwide
